SWG is a standardised way to measure and detail the thickness of wire, regardless of the manufacturer or application. In metalwork, it covers the wall thickness of tube, as well as wire mesh and thin metal sheets . It stands for standard wire gauge, owing to its origins as a system to measure wire diameter. Millimetres are an alternative way of understanding steel tubes’ wall thickness from a metric perspective, with SWG as the imperial measurement.
It's important to note that wall thickness refers to the thickness of the metal which makes up the steel tube – not the tube itself, which is usually referred to as tube diameter. SWG does not indicate the thickness of the tube overall or the space inside the tube.
An SWG to mm conversion chart is particularly useful as SWG to mm values don’t follow a linear pattern. In other words, the size difference between 1 SWG and 2 SWG is not the same as that between 8 SWG and 9 SWG, for example. That makes it difficult to convert standard wire gauge numbers to specific measurements without a chart.
