What are scaffold boards and what are they used for?
Scaffold boards (often referred to as scaffolding boards, planks, platforms and walk boards) are made of heavy-duty structural timber.
When used as part of a scaffold structure, timber scaffold boards provide a safe, temporary platform for workers when working on the development and construction of buildings.
Scaffold boards can also be used for raising heavy objects, external cladding and insulation walls.
Beyond development and construction, wooden scaffold boards have recently become a popular choice for indoor and outdoor furniture making too. Examples of outdoor projects include benches, flower beds, long lasting decking/decked seating and pergolas. Countless indoor projects can be achieved, such as shelving, work benches and tables.
These boards can be easily transformed from a blank slate into a sleek and modern look for your desired project. You can treat, stain and varnish your scaffolding planks to your liking. The possibilities are endless.
A range of scaffold boards that meet industry standards
We stock untreated scaffolding boards in 7 standard lengths which include the end bands. You can personally cut and modify these for your specific project.
Our standard lengths of our scaffold board include: 3ft, 4ft, 5ft, 6ft, 8ft, 10ft and 13ft. We also sell 13ft lengths that customers can buy in packs of 50.
Our FSC approved scaffolding boards are all 225mm wide and 38mm thick, made from responsibly sourced, whiteboard timber and are compliant to BS2482.

Get made to measure scaffold boards with our free cutting
If you need your scaffold boards cut to size, we can help. We offer unlimited free cutting across a large range of products, including our scaffolding boards. You will be able to order whatever length you need – so you’ll only need to pay for the exact size you buy.
Scaffold boards can vary by +/-5mm when cut due to the width of the saw blade, so please be aware of this when providing any cutting instructions.
(Please note the wooden scaffold boards we supply are purchased from a supplier which stores the boards outside so these can occasionally arrive wet).

Frequently asked questions
Are scaffold boards cheaper than decking?
Scaffold boards could be a more cost-effective alternative to traditional decking materials. Types of wood traditionally used in decking are generally more expensive and often require additional finishing to be safe to walk on. However, you should know that scaffold boards may need additional work to be used as decking – especially if you want decking that looks aesthetically pleasing.
Is scaffold board hard or soft wood?
At The Metal Store, our scaffold boards are made of premium European whitewood. They are graded and produced in accordance with specifications outlined in BS2482:2009, tried and tested with Quality Assured System. Heavy-duty structural timber has a dense structure, able to withstand the elements. More than this, our scaffold board is resistant to external damage, offering secure and sturdy footing for project workers.
How long will scaffold boards last outside?
When designing scaffold boards, one of the most important aspects to consider is making sure the boards last for a long time in outdoor environments. The average lifespan of scaffold boards will depend on several factors, including where they are placed, how often they are used, and the conditions they are exposed to. You can expect scaffold boards to last several years outdoors if properly maintained.
Are scaffold boards slippery when wet?
Like any wooden surface, scaffold boards can become slippery when wet. It’s important to always take extra preventive measures, such as using non-slip mats or coatings, especially in environments where boards are frequently exposed to rain, snow or frost.
Will scaffold boards warp?
Changes in moisture can cause wood to warp – there’s no way around this. However, provided scaffold boards are properly stored, handled, and given regular maintenance, you will find that the risk of warping over time is heavily reduced.
